AMARO HIGH SCHOOL
Amaro High School, Senege Kella, Ethiopia
Amaro High School is located 485 kms (301 miles) South of Addis Ababa, within the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region (SNNPR) of Ethiopia. Within this community; 97% of the population rely on mixed farming for their livelihoods with coffee being the main cash crop supported by teff, corn, wheat, barley and navy beans. The area was selected as it suffered from poor social services (particularly education) coupled with high population growth.
Amaro High School was opened in September 2013 to great celebration and joy from the whole community. The school facilities include 8 fully furnished classrooms, a fully stocked and furnished library, fresh water, sanitation, sports equipment and materials to support extra-curricular lessons.
Before the school was built students were faced with 23 km (14 miles) walk to the nearest high school which resulted in a high level of dropout. This new high school is receiving students from 13 feeder schools within a 12 km (7 mile) radius benefiting a total population of over 139,000.
