Anatoli School Primary School
Anatoli School Primary School, La Mesa, Colombia
Back in 2008 the first school ever funded and opened by the Costa Foundation was Anatoli. During a trustees visit in 2014 we discovered that the old and condemned building we believed was no longer in use was in fact being used by children aged 12-15. This was because Anatoli School had an incredibly good reputation, the nearest high school was many miles away and the school was drawing children from surrounding communities.
The trustees signed the project to enable a new school block to be built on the site of the condemned building. Work commenced in January 2015 and the new school was opened on Monday 29th August 2016. The local education authority decided to use the new building for kindergarten and primary school children as the original school built in 2008 had more space and was therefore more suitable for high school students.
The Costa Foundation 3 Peaks 2016 event which raised nearly £80,000 has part funded this new school in Colombia and image 6 shows four of the students proudly wearing the 3 Peaks 2016 fundraising t-shirts.
The playground originally funded by donations from attendees at the Costa National Conference in 2009 has now been moved so that it sits behind the new primary school.
During the official opening the children set up market stalls in the playground to show their visitors products and produce that they had made and the afternoon finished with traditional dancing and theatre.
It is ironic that this was the 60th Costa Foundation funded school project to be opened around the world, as it was also the first.
