BASURA HIGH SCHOOL
Basura High School, Bule, Ethiopia
During land research carried out in early 2014; the Costa Foundation identified that the feeder schools for this new high school were high in number; with 8 First Cycle (junior) schools all within reaching distance. In 2014 there was little or no opportunity for a high school education due to lack of nearby facilities. Thankfully, the new high schoo;l boasting 8 new classrooms, a library, sanitation, fresh water and all relevant equipment was opened to great celebration and much joy in November 2015.
Basura community is situated within Bule District of Gedeo Zone in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Regional State and can be found 460 kms south of Addis Ababa. Mixed farming is the main source of income for the inhabitants here, with coffee being the main cash crop supplemented by many subsistence crops.
A full complement of 960 students enrolled here from day one and they and their teachers have truly embraced their lessons and are actively supporting the extra-curriculum training provided by the Costa Foundation and covering topics such as Health (including HIV/AIDS awareness), Gender Equality, Environment and Sport.
As can be seen from the images; the celebration of the school opening held on the 19th November 2015 was a truly enjoyable event with members of the community of all ages participating in the singing, dancing and the genuine joy of having new school facilities.
