Centro Basico Middle School
Centro Basico Middle School, Agua Caliente, Honduras
Situated in the municipality of Copan Ruinas, Centro Basico Middle School is located in the heart of coffee growing in the small town of Agua Caliente. Copan Ruinas is one of the poorest municipalities in the country, ranked at 244th poorest out of 298 municipalities in Honduras. This Costa Foundation project aimed to strengthen an existing school for 220 children. Previously the school classrooms were structurally unstable, missing structural walls had leaking roofs and as a result did not attract the number of students in need of a safe, quality education.
Opened on Tuesday 6th September by a Costa Foundation trustee, the new school building boasts 9 classrooms and dining area and provides a bright, colourful and spacious environment for the students to learn in.
The official opening celebrations were attended by many hundreds of community members old and young. The students performed many local songs and dances dressed in beautiful, colourful traditional costumes.
