El Tepeyac Primary School
El Tepeyac Primary School, Matagalpa, Nicaragua
This project was approved by the Trustees in June 2018 and its purpose is to increase access to a safe, quality education for 575 boys and girls from the El Tepeyac community.
Work commenced in September 2018 to provide the children with a brand new pre-school classroom, a multi-grade classroom, a storage room, a kitchen, a dining room, sidewalks, playground, perimeter fence and fresh water. In addition the existing classrooms have all been refurbished and provided with new furniture. El Tepeyac community is located in the middle of coffee-growing farms and has a population of 1,247 of which 547 are under 15 years of age. This emphasises the importance of the project to this community.
Opened on the 16th April 2019 by Claire Poncon, Director of Fundacion Nicafrance the children, parents and teachers are enjoying their new facilities.
A new addition to this project is the funding of in-depth mathematics training for teachers and children. Funded by Fundacion Nicafrance in partnership with the UNO Foundation, a full time trainer has been employed who will focus on mathematics as this is the subject with the poorest performance in the Matagalpa region.
