Changing lives – saving lives
In our Ethiopian schools, the Costa Foundation funds extracurricular citizenship lessons in HIV/AIDS awareness, gender equality, environment, sports and public speaking for girls (because in some of these communities, a woman needs her husband’s permission to speak).
In one high school, a class of sixty 16 year olds who had all attended the HIV aids awareness lessons were inspired by one girl, who suggested that they all get screened for HIV/AIDS. If any child was positive, they would be treated, and anyone that was negative would be educated to make sure they stayed that way. Fortunately, all sixty children tested negative. But they didn’t stop there. Those children went out into the community and repeated this exercise, using the same ethos of treatment and education. This has made a dramatic difference to the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the village.
A child with a secondary education in Africa is three times less likely to contract HIV/AIDS.
