John Mary in Uganda
Our non-governmental partner in Uganda is PEAS (Promoting Equality in African Schools)
They build excellent quality High Schools and run them as self-financing businesses on-going. They charge low fees for the first year of the school’s existence and then the Ugandan Government subsidises the school so that students can attend without paying fees.
Onwards & Upwards High School was built in 2008 and is in Buloba, Wakiso District to the West of Kampala. In 2008, a young man named John Mary Kyalanyi walked many kilometres to the school with his mother to ask for an interview with the Director of Education. His mother introduced her son to the Director of Education and John Mary spoke about how much he wanted to be a teacher and how the reputation of the school was so good that he really wanted to have a secondary education there. However, his parents could not afford the fees; so John Mary asked if the Headmaster would ask PEAS if they would be prepared to pay for his education.
The Director of Education was so impressed with the confident and articulate young man that he phoned the CEO of PEAS in London and asked if there was any bursary funding left in the budget as “I’d particularly like us to invest in this young man”.
The good news is that the CEO agreed to fund John Mary’s secondary and University education using PEAS funds. John Mary stayed in the Boarding Rooms throughout his education period.
The even better news is that John Mary is now a teacher at Onwards & Upwards School and even has the good fortune to be able to teach his own brothers and sisters.
