KITHOMA HIGH SCHOOL
Kithoma High School, Kasese, Uganda
Kithoma High School is the third project funded by the Costa Foundation in partnership with PEAS (Promoting Equality in African Schools). Set high in the Rwenzori Mountains in the west of Uganda, PEAS High School Kithoma is one of two secondary schools in the Kasese district that opened in February 2012.
The sub county is very deprived and the Kithoma High School was the first secondary school in Buhuhira Sub County to serve the eight local primary schools. The area has a very young population and the hilly terrain makes it difficult for students to travel long distances to far away schools, making the PEAS school at Kithoma vitally important. There is a very positive attitude towards education among local people who believe that education will enable them to make the most of the natural resources in the area. The District Education Officer was particularly keen for PEAS to build a school in Kithoma as it would fulfill the District Council Resolution requiring all sub counties to have a secondary school.
The school now has eight classrooms, a staff house and a girl’s dorm and student enrollment is currently at 351 of which 36% are girls (14% behind target).
