San Lorenzo Middle School
San Lorenzo Middle School, Nariño, Colombia
Located in the south west of Colombia in the Nariño region some 900 kilometres from the capital of Bogota, San Lorenzo is a town that primarily depends on coffee for income. Indeed, the new Costa Foundation School is located next to the church and directly opposite the coffee trading centre. Only 12% of Nariño’s adult population completes primary education and levels of malnutrition are close to 21% for children under 5.
The Costa Foundation has funded a new school providing 6 classrooms, a kitchen, multi-function dining area, library, computer room and sanitation for secondary students. We have also demolished dangerous buildings that were a safety risk to the children and retaining walls that were potentially going to collapse into the playground.
The school was formally opened on Friday 26th August 2016 by one of the Costa Foundation Trustees who was impressed with the quality of the new building, the light and spacious facilities and the energy and enthusiasm that the students had for their education.
The celebration was a blaze of colour and sound involving children of all ages (including local primary school children) and was a true community event.
