Tam Giang Nursery School
Tam Giang Nursery School, Daklak, Vietnam
Situated in the rural ethnic coffee-growing district of Krong Nang in Daklak Province, Tam Giang historically struggled to provide sufficient nursery school space for the 547 children aged 3-5 that really needed facilities. This led to children using borrowed village halls, farmer’s long-houses, and even 7 borrowed classrooms from local primary schools.
An additional problem was caused by the long distances some children had to travel to these inadequate facilities which often resulted in parents keeping their children with them whilst they worked on their farms. Most of the inhabitants of Krong Nang district generate their income by farming coffee, rubber, pepper and rice. The average income per person per annum is approx. £625, which means that most households are rated as poor or extremely poor.
The Costa Foundation invested in a brand new nursery school with 8 classrooms, a multi-functional room, teachers admin block, sick bay, kitchen, security room, playground, perimeter fence, fresh water, electricity and sanitation.
In March 2017; four Costa Ambassadors (winners of the Costa Foundation champions award 2016) visited Tam Giang Nursery School to formally open the new facilities and hand the keys to the school over to the Local Education Authority. It was a typical community affair and a joy to see so many smiling faces during the day.
