WOTE YIRGACHEFFE 2nd Cycle School
Wote Yirgacheffe, Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia
Yirgachefe is one of 77 districts in the Southern nations Nationalities and Peoples Region of Ethiopia, part of the Gede’o Zone, and has a population of circa 198,000 people. 89% of the people here live in rural areas of which 82% are of the Gede’o tribe, the remainder being of different ethnic groups. 72% of the community depend on agriculture for income, primarily growing coffee, maize, cassava and beans.
Following the success of the new 2nd cycle school at Adame Yirgacheffe built in 2011, the Costa Foundation identified Wote community as the next priority for a new school. The previous structures were found to have leaking roofs, no furniture, dirt floors, and inadequate equipment resulting in a lack of teachers and a very poor environment for children to learn in.
The new school opened in September 2013 and offers 6 fully furnished classrooms, a fully stocked and furnished library, fresh water, sanitation and electricity. The entire community were present at the opening of the school, and celebrations were filled with singing and dancing and enjoyed by children and adults alike.
