Centro Basico Middle School

Situated in Copan Ruinas, one of the poorest municipalities in Honduras, Centro Basico Middle School is located in the heart of the coffee growing region, in the small town of Agua Caliente

Ranked 244th poorest out of 298 municipalities, the main source of income in Copan Ruinas is coffee. Of a population of approximately 4,200 people, 18% are illiterate and 17% are under the age of 18.

This Costa Foundation project aimed to strengthen an existing school for 220 children. Previously the school classrooms were structurally unstable, missing walls, had leaking roofs and as a result did not attract students in need of a safe, quality education.

Opened on Tuesday 6th September 2016 by a Costa Foundation trustee, the new school building boasts nine classroom, a dining area and provides a bright, colourful and spacious environment for the students to learn in.

The official opening celebrations were attended by many hundreds of community members, old and young. The students performed local songs and dances dressed in beautiful, colourful traditional costumes.
