La Esperanza School

La Esperanza Primary School in Matagalpa, Nicaragua is the tenth project carried out on the Foundation’s behalf by Fundacion Nicafrance. The school opened its doors to 134 nursery and primary school children on January 24th 2022. The first floor of the old building was made seismically sound with underpinned foundations to enable a second floor to be added. The new floor contains two classrooms but in order to make the whole school look as good as new, Fundacion Nicafrance upgraded the ground floor facilities in full to deliver a totally new look school. The addition of kitchen, dining room, store room, and teacher’s common room, new latrines, electricity, perimeter fence and improved water supply were also included in the project.

Our sincere thanks go to Peerless Coffee and ECOM who kindly funded the furniture. The community contributed by demolishing the old fence and coordinating the offloading of furniture and placement of all furnishings within the classrooms.

At the beginning of the school year, the Ministry of Education gave students from the poorest families a school backpack with learning aids to help promote the integration of these children into the educational system. They have also provided budget to fund school breakfasts here. The inauguration held in late January 2022 was attended by the entire community as well as local dignitaries and the Fundacion Nicafrance team and everyone had a wonderful time celebrating their new school.
